My name is Jack Campbell and I am running for the office of Sheriff of Sangamon County. I currently serve as the county’s Undersheriff, a position where I work with the community, all levels of law enforcement, and the media on a daily basis to provide the utmost security for the families and residents of Sangamon County. I am writing to let you know why I am seeking the office of Sheriff and why I am the best candidate for this very important job.
The position of Sheriff is very complex. It is not a political job; it is a job that takes years of firsthand experience and knowledge to fully comprehend the enormous responsibility that one undertakes when they become elected Sheriff. I possess those attributes and I know what it takes to run the office.
For the last six years I have been involved in running the day-to-day operations of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office. I was a leader at the forefront of the fiscal crisis of 2008-2009 when there were tough decisions to be made in the SCSO. I worked closely with the Fraternal Order of Police to avoid mass layoffs and to maintain the service expected and deserved by the taxpayers and families of the county. Our office, under the Sheriff and my direction, also underwent an entire policy review and rewrite to make sure we were holding our officers to the highest standards. The SCSO is also coming in under budget during a time where money is tight and we are stretching every penny.
My drive to serve and protect this county has been instilled in me since I was a child. My great uncle, Hugh Campbell, held the office of Sheriff of Sangamon County for two terms. Jim Campbell, my father, retired from the Sheriff’s office in 1992 with the rank of Sergeant after 21 years of service. It is an honor for me to carry on the Campbell family name in the Sangamon County Sheriff’s office. I began first as an Auxiliary Deputy in 1992 and in January of 1996, I was hired as a full-time Deputy. My wife and two wonderful daughters support me in my desire to continue to provide the best protection possible for this county. I am grateful to have a family that believes that service is a top priority.
I have lived in Sangamon County my entire life and believe in the community, the people, and the laws of this county. The Sheriff’s office needs expertise and leadership from someone who has served with proven results. As your Sheriff, I will continue to provide service and safety to our residents and families of Sangamon County.
Jack Campbell is the proud father of Kyleigh and Paxton Campbell and has been married to his wife Lori since 1985.
